Kelvin Cunningham
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1967, Kelvin Stewart Cunningham is a contemporary artist whose imaginative paintings blend classical portraiture, bold color, and pop culture with a playful sense of humor. Working primarily in acrylic, he combines classical draftsmanship with expressive color and theatrical compositions. He pursued advanced drawing and painting studies at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
His newest series, Legends, reimagines history's most iconic figures as modern-day rock stars. President Ronald Reagan shreds a Sunburst Washburn guitar, Marilyn Monroe commands a 1957 Gold Top Les Paul, and Charlie Chaplin threatens to steal the show with a single "ding." Einstein, Lincoln, and Beethoven also take the stage, creating a witty collision of historical significance and rock-and-roll mythology. More than humorous portraits, Legends explores fame, genius, and cultural influence, inviting viewers to see familiar historical figures in an entirely new light.
His work has been exhibited throughout Arkansas in a number of museums as well as multiple juried selections in The Neighbors Art Show. He also earned first place in the prestigious Barrett Hamilton Art Awards. Cunningham's distinctive blend of fine art, humor, and rock-and-roll nostalgia creates engaging, conversation-worthy paintings that celebrate creativity and bridge generations.
