Cheri Peden

Being a “child of the south” I love and embrace my southern upbringing. Growing up in the foothills of rural Arkansas provided me the opportunity to explore the outdoors enjoying what was wild, natural and available.  My lack of material possession was eclipsed by a communal effort to make good use of surrounding resources. It was not unusual to make a piece of pottery using pond clay. I have fond memories of the farm cheese or raw honey I received in exchange for a drawing and a cantaloupe grown in our family garden.

Several years later working in marketing and advertising absorbed most of my time.  My artwork took a “back seat”.  It wasn’t until the birth of my son and our move to Jackson, Mississippi that my passion for old family stories, southern history and painting was rekindled. The Acadian architecture, vegetable gardens, and New- Orleans- influenced culture of the area was different, yet familiar.  Shoo Fly Pie, divinity, real sweet tea, black eyed peas and Eudora Welty were things that provided colorful backdrops and awakened long forgotten memories. The south of my childhood although faded hasn’t gone away.  When I look for the past I can’t always find it. But the peeling paint on a weathered barn, an ancient ceiling tin, and a long forgotten quilt pattern remind me of the south that must be considered. Though it isn’t always as I once envisioned, the found objects and materials of my art help me reconnect to that magical place in my heart where I know I am.
